Emerald Zoysia

Emerald Zoysia is a hybrid grass created by crossing Zoysia japonica with Zoysia tenuifolia. This specific breeding combines the cold tolerance and larger blade of japonica with the fine texture and dense growth of tenuifolia. The result is a highly resilient turfgrass with a lush, dark green appearance.

Emerald Zoysia was officially released in 1955 by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in collaboration with the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station. It was specifically bred to provide a more cold-tolerant alternative to other warm-season grasses. It has remained a popular choice for southern lawns since its mid-century debut.

While Emerald Zoysia has moderate shade tolerance, it thrives best in areas that receive full sun to partial shade. Because it is a hybrid involving Zoysia tenuifolia, it forms a very dense canopy that can outcompete weeds in moderate shade. However, it will thin out significantly if planted under heavy, dense tree cover with no direct sunlight.

Emerald Zoysia is notoriously slow to establish and spread compared to other turfgrasses like Bermuda. Because it is a hybrid, it does not produce viable seeds and must be planted via sod or sprigs. It can take a full growing season for the grass to completely fill in and form its characteristic dense, luxurious lawn.
