Endre Ady

Endre Ady's 1906 collection New Poems helped push Hungarian literature toward modernism. Its Symbolist style, political urgency, and erotic intensity challenged the more traditional poetry of the period.

Ady wrote about love, death, nationalism, social change, religion, and Hungary's place in modern Europe. His poems often combine private crisis with political and cultural criticism.

Léda was Ady's poetic name for Adél Brüll, a married woman with whom he had a famous relationship. The Léda poems became one of the defining love cycles in early 20th-century Hungarian literature.

Ady became one of the leading voices associated with Nyugat, the influential Hungarian literary journal founded in 1908. Nyugat helped shape modern Hungarian literature, and Ady's work was central to its early identity.
