Epinal American Cemetery

The Epinal American Cemetery is located in Dinozé, France, near the Moselle River and the city of Épinal in the Vosges department. It is one of the American military cemeteries in France maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The site is in the Lorraine region of northeastern France.

The cemetery contains the graves of 5,255 U.S. military personnel who died during the liberation of Alsace-Lorraine and surrounding campaigns in 1944–1945. A Tablets of the Missing memorial also lists over 400 service members whose remains were never recovered. The graves are arranged in sweeping curves across the landscaped grounds.

Epinal American Cemetery primarily commemorates U.S. soldiers who died during the drive through northeastern France in 1944, particularly the fighting to cross the Moselle River and liberate Alsace-Lorraine. Many of those buried died in the harsh Vosges Mountains campaigns. The cemetery reflects the final phase of the war in the European theater.

The memorial and chapel at Epinal American Cemetery were designed with classical simplicity typical of American Battle Monuments Commission sites, including a central mall and a memorial decorated with a map of military operations. The landscaping was created to honor the fallen with dignity and serenity. Like other ABMC cemeteries, the site is maintained in perpetuity.
