Eric Fischl

Eric Fischl is an American painter and sculptor born in 1948. He became known for psychologically tense figurative scenes, especially paintings of suburban American life.

Fischl often depicts families, social gatherings, adolescence, sexuality, and uneasy private moments. His scenes may look ordinary at first but suggest conflict or discomfort beneath the surface.

He is especially associated with large-scale oil paintings, although he has also worked in sculpture and other media. His figurative approach helped support the late 20th-century return of recognizable human subjects in painting.
