Ernesto Zedillo is a Mexican economist and politician who served as president of Mexico from 1994 to 2000 as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). His administration responded to the 1994 peso crisis, pursued economic and institutional reforms, and presided over the 2000 presidential election, in which the PRI lost the presidency after decades of uninterrupted rule. He later worked in international academic and policy institutions.
