Erwin Raisz

Erwin Raisz (1893–1968) is best known for his physiographic landform diagrams, a distinctive style of cartographic illustration that depicts terrain features in a three-dimensional, block-diagram format. His hand-drawn technique became a standard method for visualizing landforms in academic and educational atlases throughout the 20th century.

'General Cartography,' first published in 1938, was the first comprehensive English-language textbook on cartography and remained influential for decades in university geography programs. It covered map projections, surveying techniques, map reproduction, and the principles of map design.

Erwin Raisz spent much of his career affiliated with Harvard University, where he taught cartography and produced numerous landform maps of the United States and other regions. Born in Hungary, he emigrated to the United States and became one of the most influential figures in American academic cartography.

Raisz's physiographic maps used a stylized oblique perspective with schematic landform symbols—such as hachured mountains and stippled plains—rather than contour lines or elevation data. This approach emphasized the visual character of landscapes and was particularly effective for educational purposes where readers needed to quickly grasp terrain types.
