European Tree Frog

description European Tree Frog Overview

The European tree frog, Hyla arborea, is a small amphibian native to parts of Europe and neighboring western Asia. Adults commonly have smooth green upper surfaces, a pale underside, expanded toe pads for climbing, and a dark stripe extending along each side, although coloration can vary. The species breeds in still or slow-moving water and spends much of the year among shrubs and other vegetation; habitat loss and wetland alteration have led to legal protection in many European countries.

insights Ranking position

European Tree Frog ranks #84 of 213 in the Amphibian ranking, behind Orange-eyed Tree Frog, ahead of Red-backed Poison Frog.

help European Tree Frog FAQ

Where can European tree frogs be found?

Hyla arborea occurs across parts of continental Europe and into western Asia, although taxonomy has split several former populations into related species. It favors sunny vegetation near ponds, wetlands, hedges, and woodland edges.

How does a European tree frog climb smooth plants?

The frog uses expanded adhesive discs at the tips of its toes to grip stems and leaves. Adults are small, usually around a few centimeters long, despite their loud breeding calls.

When do European tree frogs call?

Males call mainly during the spring breeding season from ponds and surrounding vegetation. Their repeated, carrying calls can make a small frog audible from a considerable distance at night.

Can I collect a European tree frog from the wild?

Wild collection is restricted or prohibited in many European countries because Hyla arborea is legally protected. Local wildlife law must be checked, and captive animals should come only from documented legal sources.
