Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold became an associate of Magnum Photos in 1951 and later a full member, making her one of the agency's pioneering women photographers. Magnum had been founded only a few years earlier, in 1947.

Arnold photographed Marilyn Monroe over multiple years, including during the making of "The Misfits" in 1960. Her Monroe images are valued because they show both glamour and private vulnerability.

Arnold photographed civil rights, poverty, religion, and everyday life across countries including the United States, China, and Afghanistan. Her book "In China," published after her work there in the late 1970s, is one of her major projects.

Arnold often spent time with her subjects rather than treating a portrait as a quick pose. That approach is visible in her work with figures such as Malcolm X, Joan Crawford, and Queen Elizabeth II.
