The FARO Orbis utilizes Time-of-Flight technology, which measures distance by calculating the round-trip travel time of laser pulses, to capture three-dimensional data of objects and spaces. Its effective range is designed for close-to-mid-range scanning applications, with FARO offering the separate Focus series for longer-range facility scanning.

FARO scanners are designed to work with FARO SCENE, the company's proprietary point cloud processing and registration software. SCENE enables users to align multiple scans, filter noise, and export data to third-party CAD and reverse engineering platforms such as Geomagic or Autodesk ReCap.
