FDR Memorial

The FDR Memorial was designed by the prominent American landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Completed and dedicated in 1997, Halprin's design breaks away from the traditional single-statue monument format. Instead, it utilizes a sequence of outdoor rooms made of red South Dakota granite to represent the four terms of Roosevelt's presidency.

The memorial is organized into four distinct, sequential outdoor gallery spaces, each representing one of FDR's four terms in office during the Great Depression and World War II. Each room features unique waterfalls, bronze sculptures, and carved quotes designed to evoke the specific struggles and triumphs of that era. The progression takes visitors on a chronological journey from 1933 to 1945.

The original 1997 design featured a statue of FDR seated with a cloak obscuring his wheelchair, reflecting how he hid his paralysis from the public during his lifetime. However, in 2001, an additional bronze statue was added at the entrance explicitly depicting Roosevelt in his actual wheelchair. This addition was heavily championed by disability advocates to honor the reality of his physical condition.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial was officially dedicated by President Bill Clinton on May 2, 1997. It was the first presidential memorial in Washington, D.C., to be designed completely wheelchair accessible. The dedication ceremony honored the 32nd president's enduring legacy exactly 52 years after his death in 1945.
