Ferdinand Marcos was president of the Philippines from 1965 until 1986. His administration declared martial law in 1972, extending presidential control and restricting political freedoms. Marcos and his government were also associated with widespread human-rights abuses, patronage, and the large-scale diversion of public wealth. A mass movement known as the People Power Revolution ended his rule in 1986, after which he left the country.
