Fiat Dino Spider

description Fiat Dino Spider Overview

The Fiat Dino Spider is an Italian roadster produced by Fiat between 1966 and 1973, featuring bodywork designed and manufactured by Pininfarina. It was mechanically notable for its use of the Ferrari-designed Dino V6 engine, initially of 2.0-litre displacement and later enlarged to 2.4 litres, developed from the powerplant used in Ferrari's racing cars. The Dino name and engine were part of the homologation effort for Ferrari's Formula Two program. It shared its mechanical platform with the Bertone-styled Dino coupé.

help Fiat Dino Spider FAQ

Why does the Fiat Dino Spider have a Ferrari-developed engine?

Fiat produced the Dino V6 in sufficient numbers to help Ferrari homologate the design for Formula 2 racing. The same engine family subsequently appeared in Fiat Dino road cars and Ferrari's mid-engined Dino models.

What changed when the Fiat Dino Spider moved from 2.0 to 2.4 litres?

The later Dino 2400 Spider gained a 2.4-litre V6, independent rear suspension, and other mechanical revisions. Earlier 2.0-litre cars used a live rear axle and were built from the model's 1966 introduction.

Who designed the Fiat Dino Spider and Coupe?

Pininfarina styled and built the open Spider, while Bertone produced the distinctly shaped Coupe. The two bodies therefore look unrelated despite sharing Fiat Dino mechanical foundations.

Is the Fiat Dino Spider the same car as a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS?

No, the Fiat is a front-engined road car, while the Ferrari Dino 246 GTS places its V6 behind the occupants. They share important engine ancestry, but their chassis layouts, bodywork, and driving characters are fundamentally different.
