The album features a wide range of guest collaborators including Frank Ocean, A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, Kali Uchis, Rex Orange County, Anna of the North, Estelle, and Corinne Bailey Rae. The diverse features reflected Tyler's broadening musical palette beyond the hip-hop and Odd Future-associated sound of his earlier work.

Many listeners and critics interpreted the album's lyrics — particularly on tracks like "Garden Shed" and "I Ain't Got Time!" — as Tyler addressing his bisexuality or homosexuality, a subject he had previously hinted at in interviews and earlier lyrics. Tyler himself has not fully confirmed or denied these interpretations but has continued to explore themes of sexuality on subsequent albums.

The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 60th Grammy Awards in 2018, marking Tyler's first Grammy nomination. The award ultimately went to Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN.," but the nomination signaled Tyler's growing acceptance by the mainstream music establishment.
