What is foot on Linux?

foot is a fast, lightweight terminal emulator designed for the Wayland display protocol. It runs shell programs such as Bash, Fish, and Zsh inside a graphical Linux terminal window.

Does foot support Wayland directly?

Yes, foot is built specifically for Wayland rather than being an X11 terminal with Wayland compatibility added later. It is commonly used in compositors such as Sway and other Wayland desktop environments.

Can I use foot for SSH?

Foot does not implement SSH or Telnet itself, because it is a terminal emulator rather than a remote-login client. You can open foot and run the normal OpenSSH command, such as ssh [email protected], inside its shell.

Where is foot's configuration file stored?

The usual per-user configuration file is ~/.config/foot/foot.ini on Linux. Its settings cover fonts, colors, key bindings, scrollback, and terminal behavior.
