Fra Angelico

Fra Angelico's famous frescoes are in the convent of San Marco in Florence, now the Museo di San Marco. Many were painted in the 1440s for Dominican friars' cells and devotional spaces.

Fra Angelico means Angelic Brother, a name connected to his reputation for holiness and devotional painting. He was a Dominican friar as well as a major early Renaissance artist.

Fra Angelico's Annunciations often combine clear Renaissance space with quiet religious intimacy. The San Marco Annunciation places Mary and Gabriel in a simple loggia, using restraint rather than crowded drama.

Fra Angelico uses perspective, light, and human feeling while still serving a devotional purpose. His work belongs to fifteenth-century Florence, alongside the broader shift toward naturalism associated with artists such as Masaccio.
