Francesco Petrarca

Petrarch is most famous for his Canzoniere (Songbook), a massive collection of poems written in the vernacular Tuscan dialect. The poems primarily focus on his unrequited love for a woman named Laura. This collection popularized the 14-line Petrarchan sonnet form throughout Europe.

Petrarch is often called the Father of Humanism for his role in rediscovering and translating ancient Roman and Greek texts. He actively searched monastic libraries for lost letters of classical authors like Cicero. His work fundamentally shifted the cultural landscape of 14th-century Italy away from medieval scholasticism.

Laura was the idealized muse for Petrarch's poetry, reportedly a married noblewoman he saw in a church in Avignon, France, in 1327. He wrote about his devotion to her for the rest of his life, long after her death during the Black Plague. Scholars still debate whether Laura was a real historical woman or a purely allegorical figure.

While he wrote his love poetry in Italian, Petrarch actually wrote the vast majority of his scholarly and philosophical works in Latin. His mastery of classical Latin was considered unmatched during his era. However, his Italian poetry ultimately had a more lasting impact on the development of the modern Italian language.
