Franchthi Cave

description Franchthi Cave Overview

Franchthi Cave is a prehistoric cave site overlooking the Bay of Argos in the Argolid peninsula of Greece, with human occupation spanning roughly 38,000 years from the Upper Paleolithic through the Neolithic. Excavations revealed a transition from hunter-gatherer subsistence to early farming, as well as evidence of fishing and seafaring. Obsidian from the island of Melos, found in Paleolithic layers, indicates long-distance maritime exchange. The site provides one of the longest continuous occupation sequences in Greece.
