Frank Bursley Taylor (1860–1938) was an American geologist best known for independently proposing a theory of continental drift. In a 1910 presentation to the Geological Society of America, Taylor suggested that the continents had once been joined and had slowly moved over geological time. His hypothesis was developed roughly contemporaneously with, but independently of, Alfred Wegener's more widely recognized formulation of continental displacement. Taylor attributed these massive crustal movements to the tidal forces generated by the moon's gravitational pull.
