Three of the four novellas have been adapted: '1922' was released as a Netflix film in 2017 starring Thomas Jane, 'A Good Marriage' became a 2014 film starring Joan Allen and Anthony LaPaglia, and 'Big Driver' was a 2014 Lifetime TV movie starring Maria Bello. 'Fair Extension' remains the only novella without a screen adaptation.

'1922' is entirely fictional, set on a Nebraska farm where a man conspires with his son to murder his wife. King has cited his general interest in guilt and rural crime as influences rather than any specific real case. The 1922 period setting distinguishes it from the more contemporary backdrops of the other three novellas.

The Scribner hardcover, published in November 2010, runs roughly 370 pages containing four novellas of roughly 60 to 130 pages each. This places it in the same format category as King's earlier novella collections Different Seasons (1982) and Four Past Midnight (1990). Each novella is self-contained with no connecting narrative framework.

The audiobook features separate narrators for each of the four novellas, including Craig Wasson and Jessica Hecht, both of whom have narrated other Stephen King titles. The multi-narrator approach reflects the distinct protagonist voice of each story. The total runtime is approximately 14 hours.
