Gafsa Oasis

Gafsa was known as Capsa in antiquity. It became a Roman settlement and remained important because its springs supported an oasis in west-central Tunisia.

The area has evidence of human occupation since prehistoric times, and the name Capsa is also linked with the prehistoric Capsian culture. The oasis later developed through Roman, Islamic, and modern periods.

Its springs allow date palms and other crops to grow in an otherwise dry region. Traditional oasis farming uses layers of vegetation, with taller palms helping create a cooler environment for lower crops.

Gafsa is a regional center near major phosphate-mining operations. This modern mining economy exists alongside the older oasis, Roman, and agricultural history of the city.
