GameCube WaveBird Wireless Controller

Despite some descriptions citing infrared, the Nintendo GameCube WaveBird controller actually connects to the console via a 2.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) signal. This RF technology required a receiver plugged into the console's controller port but allowed players to play without a direct line of sight.

The WaveBird operates on two standard AA batteries housed in the bottom of its ergonomic pistol grip. The battery life was highly praised at the time of its 2002 release, offering dozens of hours of continuous gameplay.

Nintendo omitted the rumble motor from the WaveBird to keep the controller's weight down and to maximize the lifespan of the AA batteries. The standard wired GameCube controller retained the vibration feature.

The controller features a channel selector dial allowing it to operate reliably at distances of up to 20 feet. The RF signal easily passes through physical obstacles, meaning players did not need to point the controller directly at the receiver.
