Gibson SG Standard

In 1961, Gibson redesigned the original Les Paul guitar to create a thinner, lighter instrument with better upper-fret access. This was achieved by shifting to a double-cutaway solid mahogany body design. However, the name "Les Paul" was dropped shortly after when the guitarist's endorsement contract expired, and it was rebranded as the SG (Solid Guitar).

The Gibson SG Standard is famously associated with rock legend Angus Young of the hard rock band AC/DC. It was also the primary guitar for Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, whose heavy riffs defined the heavy metal genre. Additionally, Eric Clapton famously played a Gibson SG during his tenure with the band Cream.

The body of the Gibson SG Standard is predominantly constructed from solid mahogany wood, which contributes to its warm, resonant tone and lightweight feel. The neck is also made of mahogany and usually features a rosewood fretboard. The use of mahogany throughout the instrument gives the SG its signature, sustain-heavy sound.

Modern Gibson SG Standard guitars typically come equipped with a pair of Burstbucker humbucking pickups, specifically the Burstbucker 1 in the neck position and the Burstbucker 2 in the bridge position. These pickups are designed to replicate the sound of the vintage "PAF" humbuckers from the late 1950s. This configuration provides a versatile tone suitable for both clean blues and high-gain rock.
