The Mountaineer series features a center column, making it more versatile for quick height adjustments and easier to pack down for travel. In contrast, the Systematic line eliminates the center column entirely to maximize absolute rigidity and weight capacity for heavy telephoto lenses. The Mountaineer is ideal for run-and-gun shooters, while Systematic is built for studio or landscape specialists.

Carbon eXact is Gitzo's proprietary carbon fiber weave that combines high-density, ultra-thin carbon fibers with an updated composite matrix. This construction provides significantly increased rigidity and payload capacity without adding extra weight to the tripod legs. It also improves vibration damping compared to standard carbon fiber tubes.

Gitzo was originally founded in France, but after being acquired by the Vitec Group (now Videndum), production was moved to Italy. The high-end carbon fiber legs, including the Mountaineer series, are currently manufactured in a specialized facility in Italy. This ensures strict quality control over their premium materials.

To maintain the smooth operation of Gitzo's G-Lock Ultra leg joints, you should periodically disassemble the legs and wipe the carbon tubes with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid using lubricants on the carbon fiber, as the locking mechanism relies purely on clean friction. You can apply a tiny amount of grease to the internal stainless steel bushings if they begin to squeak.
