description Google Home (Original) Overview
This is the original Google Home speaker. Like the 2nd Gen Echo, it is technologically surpassed by the Nest Mini and Nest Audio. While it still functions, its software support and audio performance are outdated. It serves as a historical reference point rather than a recommended purchase for modern use.
help Google Home (Original) FAQ
When was the original Google Home released?
Google announced the original Google Home at Google I/O in May 2016, and it went on sale later in 2016. It was Google's first branded smart speaker with Google Assistant.
Does the original Google Home still work with Google Assistant?
The original speaker can still use supported Google Assistant and Google Home functions when Google's services and the device remain compatible. Available commands and integrations can change over time, so it should not be treated as equivalent to a current Nest speaker.
How is the original Google Home different from the Nest Mini?
The original Google Home is a larger speaker with a distinctive sloped top and removable base, while the Nest Mini is a smaller successor designed for easier placement. Google moved the Home speaker family toward the Nest branding after the original model launched.
Can the original Google Home control smart lights?
Yes. Google positioned it as a voice controller for compatible connected devices such as smart bulbs and Nest products. Setup requires linking supported devices in the Google Home app and using the same Google account.
