language

description Gore-Tex Pro Overview

Gore-Tex Pro is a family of waterproof, windproof, and breathable laminates developed by W. L. Gore for demanding outerwear. It uses a multilayer construction in which a protective face textile, membrane, and inner layer work together, rather than an exposed membrane bonded directly to the wearer-facing surface.

It is intended for durable jackets and trousers used by mountaineers, climbers, skiers, guides, and others operating in severe weather.

insights Ranking position

Gore-Tex Pro ranks #14 of 189 in the Textile ranking, behind Lycra, ahead of Kente Cloth.

help Gore-Tex Pro FAQ

What makes Gore-Tex Pro different from ordinary Gore-Tex?

Gore-Tex Pro is engineered for demanding alpine and professional-style use, with a tough face textile, waterproof membrane, and protective inner backer bonded into a three-layer laminate. Ordinary Gore-Tex spans a wider range of lighter, softer, and less abrasion-focused garments.

Does Gore-Tex Pro keep working if the outer fabric looks soaked?

The membrane can remain waterproof even when the face fabric wets out, but the jacket will feel colder and less breathable. Cleaning the garment and restoring its durable water-repellent treatment helps rain bead on the surface again.

Is Gore-Tex Pro the best choice for everyday rainwear?

Not necessarily. Its robust three-layer construction suits mountaineering, skiing, and repeated abrasion from packs or rock, but it can be stiffer, noisier, heavier, and more expensive than a casual rain shell.

Can a torn Gore-Tex Pro jacket be repaired?

Small punctures can often be sealed with a purpose-made patch such as Gear Aid Tenacious Tape, while larger damage may need an authorized repair center. Seam tape delamination or widespread fabric failure is different from a simple tear and should be assessed under the garment maker's warranty.
