Gotham Central

"Gotham Central" was co-written by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka, with art primarily handled by Michael Lark. Published by DC Comics starting in 2003, the series focused heavily on character-driven police procedural elements. It ran for exactly 40 issues before concluding in 2006.

The series primarily follows the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) of the Gotham City Police Department. These detectives struggle to solve crimes and maintain order in a city frequently overshadowed by supervillains. They operate under the constant stress of Batman's extrajudicial shadow.

Batman is intentionally relegated to a background or secondary role in "Gotham Central," rarely appearing fully on panel. The narrative focuses on the perspectives of the regular human police officers, highlighting their frustrations working in the Dark Knight's city. The creators wanted to emphasize the GCPD's perspective rather than the superhero's.

Despite its relatively short run and cancellations, "Gotham Central" won several industry awards, including the Eisner Award. It earned critical acclaim in the mid-2000s for its gritty, realistic portrayal of working-class cops in a fantastical setting. The series remains a highly influential fan favorite.
