Griffin Bell was an American lawyer and jurist who served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit before becoming attorney general under President Jimmy Carter. He led the Department of Justice from 1977 to 1979, addressing judicial selection, government ethics, intelligence oversight, and the department's relationship with the White House. After leaving office, he returned to private legal practice and participated in prominent corporate and governmental investigations.
