help Gunbuster FAQ
Why is Gunbuster important to Gainax history?
Gunbuster was produced by Gainax and released as a 6-episode OVA from 1988 to 1989. It was Hideaki Anno's major directorial debut before Neon Genesis Evangelion.
What are the Space Monsters in Gunbuster?
The Space Monsters are huge alien lifeforms threatening humanity as it expands into space. Noriko Takaya trains to fight them in giant mecha alongside Kazumi Amano.
Why does Gunbuster talk so much about time dilation?
Gunbuster uses relativistic travel to make space battles emotionally costly, because pilots return to find Earth has aged differently. That science-fiction device drives some of the OVA's most famous tragic moments.
Is Diebuster a sequel to Gunbuster?
Yes, Diebuster, also known as Gunbuster 2, is the later sequel OVA made for Gainax's 20th anniversary era. It has a different style and cast, but it deliberately echoes Noriko, the Buster Machine legacy, and the scale of the original.
