Having Church

In the Black church tradition, 'having church' describes a service where worship genuinely takes over — heartfelt singing, shouting, testimony, and call-and-response between the congregation and the leaders. As an album title it signals an unfiltered live recording of a real service rather than a polished studio set.

The classic lineup is the Hammond B-3 organ, piano, bass, and drums driving a mass choir. That organ-plus-choir combination is the signature sound of traditional Black church recordings.

It is the back-and-forth exchange between a leader — a soloist, choir director, or pastor — and the choir or congregation, rooted in African American worship traditions going back generations. On a live album it is usually the engine that builds the service's momentum.

The format was defined by artists like Rev. James Cleveland, often called the King of Gospel music, and Shirley Caesar. In more recent decades, Hezekiah Walker & the Love Fellowship Choir carried the live mass-choir recording tradition forward.
