HEMA Rapier

Practitioners study surviving Renaissance and early modern treatises by masters such as Ridolfo Capoferro (whose 1610 'Gran Simulacro' is a key Italian source), Salvator Fabris, and Jerónimo Sánchez de Carranza, the founder of the Spanish Destreza tradition. These manuals provide detailed instruction on stance, footwork, blade actions, and tactics.

HEMA rapier uses heavier, more historically accurate weapon simulators and attempts to reconstruct real historical combat techniques from period manuals, whereas Olympic fencing uses specialized lightweight electric weapons optimized for a modern sport with electronic scoring. HEMA rapier also incorporates off-hand techniques and companion weapons like daggers or cloaks.

Sparring typically requires a fencing mask rated for HEMA, a puncture-resistant jacket (often meeting the CEN Level 1 or 2 standard), gloves, a gorget for throat protection, and sometimes a chest protector. Practitioners use flexible steel trainers or synthetic blades designed to bend safely on thrusts.

Training emphasizes thrusts, blade opposition (controlling the opponent's blade to create a safe line of attack), precise footwork, distance management, timing, and defensive actions using the off-hand, a dagger, or a cloak. The rapier is primarily a thrusting weapon, so most actions revolve around finding, gaining, and exploiting the line.
