Hengill Mudpots

description Hengill Mudpots Overview

The Hengill Mudpots are geothermal surface features within the Hengill volcanic system in southwestern Iceland, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Reykjavik. Hengill is one of Iceland's most active high-temperature geothermal areas, and the surrounding region supplies energy to the Nesjavellir and Hellisheidi geothermal power stations. Mudpots form where geothermal heat vaporizes groundwater in clay-rich substrate, producing bubbling pools of warm mud alongside fumaroles and hot springs.
