Hericium americanum

description Hericium americanum Overview

Hericium americanum is a North American tooth fungus that produces large, white, branching fruiting bodies on dead or declining hardwood. Numerous pendant spines hang from the branches, giving the fungus the clustered appearance associated with the common name bear's-head tooth. It is closely related to other Hericium species, including H. coralloides, and distinguishing them can require attention to branching pattern, spine arrangement, host tree, and microscopic characters.
