Hieroglyphics

Despite some confusing catalog descriptions placing them in New York, the Hieroglyphics collective is actually deeply rooted in Oakland, California. They are foundational to the 1990s underground West Coast hip-hop scene. The collective was founded by Del the Funky Homosapien.

The collective includes prominent groups like Souls of Mischief and the Prose, alongside solo artists such as Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, and Domino. Souls of Mischief famously released the critically acclaimed jazz-rap album "93 'til Infinity" in 1993. Their iconic three-eyed logo is one of the most recognizable symbols in underground hip-hop.

Initially, members like Del the Funky Homosapien and Souls of Mischief released their early records through major labels like Elektra Records and Jive Records. However, due to industry frustrations over marketing and creative control, they formed their own independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium, in the mid-1990s. This allowed them to drop complex lyricism without corporate interference.

While they are known for dense, complex lyricism and innovative rhyme structures, Hieroglyphics is fundamentally rooted in traditional boom-bap beat production, not spoken word. They built their reputation on classic jazz and funk samples layered with tight drum loops. Their abstract lyrics are delivered rhythmically over beats, distinguishing them from spoken-word artists.
