Histioteuthis celetaria

description Histioteuthis celetaria Overview

Histioteuthis celetaria, the elegant jewel squid, is a histioteuthid or cock-eyed squid of the Atlantic Ocean. Like other Histioteuthis, it has strongly unequal eyes, with the left eye much larger than the right in adults, and numerous light organs on the mantle, head and arms. Older classifications recognized Atlantic and Pacific forms, while modern databases may treat the Pacific form as Histioteuthis pacifica, so the species name should be used with attention to the taxonomic source.
