description Hitda Codex Overview
The Hitda Codex is an Ottonian illuminated Gospel book commissioned by Hitda, abbess of the convent at Meschede, around the beginning of the 11th century. Its manuscript paintings depict scenes from the life and ministry of Christ with forceful gestures, vivid color, and expressive figures rather than strict naturalism. Preserved in Darmstadt, it is studied as an important example of manuscript production associated with the Cologne school of illumination.
