Hong Kong Derby

The Hong Kong Derby boasts one of the most lucrative prize purses in global horse racing, currently offering a total of HK$24 million. This massive payout, which is roughly equivalent to over $3 million USD, makes it a highly sought-after title for owners and trainers. Only four-year-old horses bred in Hong Kong or imported to the region are eligible to compete.

The race is held annually at Sha Tin Racecourse, the premier horse racing venue operated by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Sha Tin features a 1000-meter straight track and a sweeping turf course that regularly hosts other major international Group 1 races. The facility is packed with tens of thousands of passionate racing fans on Derby day.

Unlike many international classic races restricted to three-year-olds, the Hong Kong Derby is exclusively for four-year-old horses. This unique rule was established to account for the fact that many top horses are imported to Hong Kong at an older age. It allows local owners to showcase their significant investments before the horses move on to open-age Group 1 competition.

The modern era of the Hong Kong Derby, under its current four-year-old restriction, began in the early 1980s. Co-Tack, ridden by legendary Hong Kong jockey Tony Cruz, famously won the race in 1983, setting a track record at the time. Since then, winners like Golden Sixty have cemented their legacies by winning this specific race.
