Houari Boumédiène was an Algerian military officer, revolutionary, and politician who took power in a coup against President Ahmed Ben Bella on June 19, 1965. He became chairman of the Revolutionary Council and prime minister, then served as president after Algeria adopted a new constitution in 1976, remaining in office until 1978. His FLN government pursued a socialist program that included nationalization in the oil, industrial, and banking sectors and renewed agrarian reform.
