Hugo Häring

description Hugo Häring Overview

Hugo Häring (1882-1958) was a German architect and theorist who advocated for 'organic functionalism.' Unlike contemporaries like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Häring believed buildings should evolve from their specific functions and local conditions rather than from preconceived forms. His most significant built work was the Garkau Farm project (1924-1925) in northern Germany, designed according to agricultural processes. As secretary of Der Ring, an influential modernist architects group, Häring promoted a softer, site-specific modernism, though his ideas remained less widely implemented than the standardized International Style that came to define modernist architecture.
