The 1960 Italian drama follows Antonio, a notoriously handsome man whose physical beauty masks his psychological struggles with impotence. His inability to consummate his marriage to the beautiful Barbara causes a massive scandal in his hometown.

The film's screenplay was co-written by the renowned Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, alongside Goffredo Parise. The script adapted Vitaliano Brancati’s novel, reimagining it with a contemporary setting during Italy's fascist period.

The film features legendary Italian actors Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale in the starring roles. Mastroianni's performance brilliantly captured the underlying tragedy of his seemingly perfect character.
