Inception (2010)

Christopher Nolan has deliberately left the ending of Inception ambiguous, with the spinning top appearing to wobble slightly before cutting to black. Nolan has stated in interviews that the important point is not whether Cobb is dreaming, but that he has chosen to walk away from the top and embrace his children. The film does not provide a definitive answer.

In Inception, totems are personal objects that allow dream-sharers to distinguish reality from a dream. Cobb's spinning top would spin indefinitely in a dream but fall in reality, while Arthur's loaded die and Ariadne's hollowed-out chess piece function similarly. Each totem has a unique physical property that only its owner fully understands.

Tenet, also directed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2020, is not a sequel or prequel to Inception. Both films share themes of time manipulation and heist-style plots, but they exist in separate fictional universes with no overlapping characters or storylines. Nolan has described them as independent projects exploring different science-fiction concepts.

Inception won four Academy Awards at the 83rd Oscars in 2011: Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay but did not win those categories. Hans Zimmer's score was notably not nominated, though it became one of the most iconic film soundtracks of the decade.
