Irish Linen

Irish linen is linen woven in Ireland from flax fiber, although the flax itself does not necessarily have to be grown there. The Irish Linen Guild protects and promotes the designation for qualifying products.

Ulster developed a concentrated network of flax preparation, spinning, weaving, bleaching, and finishing. The Irish Linen Board, founded in 1711, encouraged technical improvement and expansion of the trade.

Real linen is made from flax and typically shows natural slubs, high absorbency, low elasticity, and a tendency to crease sharply. A label naming Ireland as the place of weaving is more meaningful than branding that merely uses an Irish motif.

Flax fibers can produce fabric that is strong, absorbent, smooth, and increasingly soft with laundering. Those qualities made Irish linen especially prized for handkerchiefs, napkins, tablecloths, shirts, and fine household textiles.
