Irving Robert Kaufman, born in 1910 and deceased in 1992, was a United States federal judge who presided over the 1951 espionage trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in the Southern District of New York and sentenced them to death. In 1961 he joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where he served as chief judge from 1973 to 1980. His later appellate work included cases involving civil rights, free speech, antitrust, and the insanity defense.
