description Iznik Lake Overview
İznik Lake is a freshwater lake in Bursa Province in northwestern Turkey, in the Marmara region, beside the city of İznik, known in antiquity as Nicaea. The lake is an inland water body with ecological, historical, and recreational importance, linking a modern Turkish settlement with a landscape associated with Roman and Byzantine history. Two landmark ecumenical Church councils were convened at Nicaea in 325 and 787 CE, making the lake's setting relevant to the study of early Christianity.
