Jeffrey Dean

MapReduce, described in a 2004 paper by Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, is a programming model for processing massive datasets in parallel across clusters of commodity machines. Google used it to rebuild its web index, and the open-source Hadoop MapReduce framework became the backbone of the 2000s big data movement; the paper has been cited tens of thousands of times.

Bigtable, described in a 2006 paper by Dean, Ghemawat, and colleagues, is a distributed storage system for structured data designed to scale to petabytes across thousands of machines. It directly influenced the design of Apache HBase, Apache Cassandra, and Amazon DynamoDB, establishing the wide-column store model central to the NoSQL ecosystem.

Dean co-led the development of TensorFlow, Google's open-source machine learning framework released in 2015, which became one of the most widely used ML platforms in the world. He had previously led Google Brain, the company's deep learning research team, which built the infrastructure for large-scale neural network training.

Dean serves as Chief Scientist at Google, focusing on AI and machine learning research, having previously led Google AI and Google Brain. He joined Google in mid-1999 as one of its earliest employees and helped build core infrastructure including the advertising system, web indexing, and search serving.
