Jeffrey Weeks

Jeffrey Weeks is a renowned British sociologist and historian whose career is largely dedicated to the study of human sexuality, sexual identities, and social regulation. He is considered a foundational figure in the historical documentation of lesbian and gay history in Britain.

Published in 1977, "Coming Out" traces the history and politics of homosexual life in Britain from the 19th century through the modern gay liberation movement. It was one of the first major academic works to rigorously document the shifting social and legal landscapes of LGBTQ+ life in the UK.

Weeks approaches sexual identity through a social constructionist lens, arguing that concepts like homosexuality and heterosexuality are not fixed biological truths. Instead, he demonstrates that sexual identities are historically contingent, shaped over time by shifting social, political, and cultural forces.

Jeffrey Weeks spent much of his highly distinguished academic career at South Bank University in London, where he served as a professor and later an Emeritus Professor of Sociology. He has also been heavily involved in public history projects related to London's LGBTQ+ communities.
