Jibanananda Das

Jibanananda Das is a Bengali modernist poet whose most famous work is arguably Rupasi Bangla. This collection, known for its vivid rural imagery, was published posthumously after his tragic death in 1954.

He was born in present-day Bangladesh, spending much of his early life in the Barisal region before moving to Kolkata for his teaching career. The lush, rural landscapes of his youth heavily influenced the natural imagery found throughout his poetry.

Das revolutionized Bengali literature by moving away from the purely romantic poetry of earlier eras and introducing complex metaphors, darker themes, and a deep connection to the natural world. His work captured the existential melancholy of the changing landscape in the early-to-mid 20th century.

The poet met a tragic and sudden end in 1954 when he was struck by a tram in Kolkata. He passed away a few days later from his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of unpublished manuscripts that were later brought to print.
