Joe Henderson

While he had many acclaimed records, Joe Henderson's 1963 album "Page One" is considered one of his most famous and accessible works. It features classic tracks like "Recorda Me" and "Blue Bossa," both of which became major jazz standards. Later in his career, his 1992 tribute album "Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn" also won a Grammy Award.

Joe Henderson was exclusively a tenor saxophone player, known for playing a Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone. His distinct, powerful tone was the result of a highly sophisticated harmonic vocabulary and a unique approach to melodic narrative. He represented the pinnacle of modern hard bop music during his era.

While Joe Henderson did not record extensively as a permanent member of Miles Davis's band, he was deeply involved in the 1960s hard bop and post-bop scene alongside Davis's rhythm sections. He frequently played and recorded with legendary musicians like Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. He is most famous for his extensive work with pianist Horace Silver and trumpeter Kenny Dorham.

Joe Henderson is primarily celebrated as a pioneer of modern hard bop, though his music often ventured into post-bop and avant-garde jazz. His technical mastery allowed him to navigate complex chord changes while maintaining a deep sense of lyrical melody.
