John Enders (1897–1985) was an American virologist at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. In 1949, with colleagues Thomas Weller and Frederick Robbins, he demonstrated that poliovirus could be grown in cultures of non-neural human tissue, overturning the assumption that the virus could only replicate in nerve cells. This breakthrough enabled large-scale virus production and made possible the polio vaccines developed by Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin. The three researchers shared the 1954 Nobel Prize.
