Sullivan was an American professional boxer recognized as the last heavyweight champion of the bare-knuckle era and the first heavyweight champion under the modern Marquess of Queensberry Rules. He held the world heavyweight title from 1882 until 1892, when he was defeated by James J. Corbett.
