Johnston & Murphy Melton

The Melton is a wingtip derby, so its eyelet flaps are open and sit on top of the shoe's vamp. That construction differs from an Oxford, which normally has closed lacing.

Its broguing forms a wing-shaped toe pattern that extends toward the sides of the shoe. The perforated detailing gives the Johnston & Murphy Melton its traditional dress-shoe character.

Both are recognizable wingtip dress shoes with broguing, but the Melton is a derby while the Allen Edmonds Strand is an Oxford. The open-versus-closed lacing difference changes how formal and how adjustable the shoes feel.

It is intended to add cushioning and support inside a traditional brogued leather-style upper. The shoe keeps the classic wingtip derby shape while adding comfort features associated with Johnston & Murphy's modern construction.
